You're engaged! There's so much excitement after you've "said yes"! The first stop is usually to the supermarket to load up on all the Bridal Magazines. Then, it's off to the Bridal Shop to try on wedding gowns! Here are a few tips to make the process most enjoyable!
First off, less opinions, less stress! Don't bring more than 1 or 2 people with you. And think carefully about which people you bring with you. Bring people that are supportive of your choices, as opposed to people who will try to impose their own tastes and have very strong opinions. A dress fitting can go from smiles to tears in no time, if the bride falls in love with a dress and doesn't get the reaction she desires from her friends or family. Some times outside issues can influence the process. For instance, if there's a family member that doesn't approve of the marriage, doesn't get along with other members of the group, or is jealous, etc. those personal feelings can cast a shadow over the entire wedding planning experience. Too many varying opinions can also be problematic and make it impossible to make a decision when you are getting mixed reviews from the crowd. The same applies to shopping for Bridesmaid dresses. It's impossible to please everyone, so consider just one or two of your most valued opinions, and chose dresses based on that feedback. This is YOUR wedding, so stand your ground and wear what you love!
A few other important factors to consider are that wedding gowns can take up to 6 months to arrive. So, you'll want to consider what time frame you have to work with, as it may limit some dress options. Some times you can take an in stock dress and have it altered to your size. Also keep in mind that with ordering a dress, it will still need alterations. It's very rare that a dress fits perfectly out of the box. Generally 2 or 3 fittings are required to achieve the best fit. Always wear the undergarments and shoes that you plan to wear on the wedding day for your fittings. This is also true for bridesmaid dress fittings. It's good to allow about 4 weeks for the alterations process. Speak up and be specific about how you want things to look. Alterations professionals do their best to achieve your vision. Communication is top priority!
Happy Shopping!
